Legally disadvantaged

In 1924, a law was introduced forcing women civil servants aged under 45 to retire from their position the moment they got married (RD 13 March 1924, no 122/General Civil Service Regulations 1931, Art. 97).

By the time these sportswomen were photographed in 1948, there were 291 women working for the Tax and Customs Administration in one of the two organisations. They were probably unmarried: after all, there was a law in effect. They pose smiling, in their sports outfits.

At that time there was one woman inspector, J.A. Engels (LLM) and one woman deputy accountant, M.F. van ‘t Hoff Stolk. Five women worked as clerks at Customs, two women worked as surveyors and 22 as technical draughtswomen at the Land Registry. The other women worked in support roles.
